Sciences Stream: Communicating your science effectively to engage audiences and empower your career

To be a successful scientist, you need be an effective communicator. The ability to engage others and clearly communicate the vision, relevance and impact of your ideas can empower you to create a thriving career by enhancing your ability to secure funding for your research, open up new career opportunities, drive innovation through inter-disciplinary collaboration, educate your peers and inspire the next generation of scientists.

Effectively sharing your science story with the wider community in a clear, meaningful and engaging way helps make your science more inclusive and relevant. Promoting a wider understanding of the vital role your science plays in addressing real world challenges and its impact on our daily lives can drive improved policies across all levels of government, encourage more mindful decision-making amongst individuals and facilitate more informed, evidence-based decision making within our communities.

This interactive online workshop will give you the skills and confidence to strategically and successfully communicate your science to a broad and diverse audience.

What you’ll learn

In this unique professional development experience, Jess will cover a range of topics across the session including fundamental communication practices, advanced techniques, personal pitching, entrepreneurial insights, networking and career inspiration. This 90-minute virtual interactive experience will provide an opportunity to immediately put into practice the information and tools that Jess provides.

Applicable for all roles and career stages, Jess will also share lessons and insights from her extraordinary career journey. 

Meet your facilitator – Jess Heinemann

Jess Heinemann is a professionally trained presenter and Science Communicator with a passion for education, performance and Lego. Jess was a contestant on Lego Masters Season 3 (Channel 9) and is a strong advocate for women in STEM.

She has experience Internationally and across Australia in developing, writing, managing and delivering interactive shows, hands-on workshops, professional development, careers information sessions, events, conferences and mentoring programs.

She began her career as a Scientist working in the lab trying to grow organs for transplant, before discovering her love of performing and communicating Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). She holds a Bachelor of Biomolecular Science, an Honours degree in Applied Science, a Masters of Science Communication (Outreach), and has also trained in screen acting and musical theatre.

She is an enthusiastic presenter, engaging host and constantly strives to make a difference, smash stereotypes and inspire others to achieve their dreams
